Vol. 396 No. 3

Written Answers. - County Meath Company.

John V. Farrelly

Question:

138 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce, following his commitment in Dáil Éireann in October-November 1989 regarding a company (details supplied) in County Meath, the steps taken to ensure the continuing employment of the 260 people working there at present; the number of companies which have been contacted with a view to purchasing this advance factory; if the present owners are satisfied that the jobs can be secured; if the IDA are seeking a purchaser; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I wish to reaffirm my concern and, indeed, the confidence that I expressed in the House on 1 November last about the prospects for finding alternative manufacturing possibilities for this plant. I have had discussions in this connection with the chief executive of the parent company in the USA and I am very encouraged by his positive response.

Particulars of the IDA's contacts with companies or of their activities in connection with finding alternative manufacturing possibilities are a day-to-day matter for that agency. They are not matters on which I can comment. Furthermore, the confidentiality of those contacts is important for their success.
