Vol. 396 No. 3

Written Answers. - Forest Supplies.

Edward Nealon

Question:

144 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Energy if he will give details of the present supplies and projected supplies over the next ten years of forest thinnings, clearings and other types of timber that would be used in a woodpulp industry, in excess of raw material being used in Scarriff, County Clare and Clonmel, County Tippearary; and the location of these supplies.

Details of projected annual supplies and location of pulpwood and similar raw material is a commercial function of Coillte Teoranta and private timber producers and processors. Development plans outlined in the National Development Plan envisage an increase of approximately 50 per cent in the availability of this material between 1988 and 1993 and further increases are likely in the period up to 2000. This would provide raw material for the establishment of a major new pulpwood industry and the expansion of existing plants. The IDA is in contact with potential new investors.
