Question:

163 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí who have received training abroad in (1) 1987 (2) 1988 and (3) 1989; the type of training involved; the countries providing same; and the resources allocated in each of the relevant years for that purpose.

The numbers of members of the Garda Síochána who attended training courses abroad in each of the years 1987, 1988 and 1989 were 22 and 35 respectively.

The courses involved were police training courses, including courses on crime prevention and detection techniques, fingerprint and other specialised courses and advanced driving courses. Course venues were in the United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Federal Republic of Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, France and Spain.

The amounts expended under the Garda Vote on fees for extern training courses (in Ireland and abroad) in 1987, 1988 and 1989 were £52,000, £93,000 and £95,000 respectively. The most significant costs involved in training courses abroad relate to travel and subsistence.
