Vol. 396 No. 3

Written Answers. - Local Authority Statistics.

Austin Deasy

Question:

179 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Environment the number of local authorities in the State; the number which have been convicted of causing pollution over the past ten years; the number of instances of more than one conviction; and the local authorities concerned.

There are 87 local authorities comprising 27 county councils, five county boroughs, six borough corporations and 49 urban district councils.

The only relevant convictions of local authorities over the past ten years relate to water pollution. In this regard, I would refer the Deputy to the reply to Question No. 344 of 30 January, 1990.
