Vol. 396 No. 3

Written Answers. - Infant Mortality Rates.

Tony Gregory

Question:

196 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Health the infant mortality rates for each year from 1985 to 1989 inclusive; and if he will make a statement on any changes in these rates in recent years.

The infant mortality rates per 1,000 live births for 1975, 1980 and for 1985 to 1988 inclusive are as follows:

Infant Mortality Rate: 1975, 1980 and 1985-1988.

1975

1980

1985

1986

1987

1988*

17.5

11.1

8.8

8.9

7.9

8.2

*Data for 1988 is provisional. A provisional rate for 1989 is not yet available.
It will be seen from the table above that the infant mortality rate has continued to drop to a point where it is half what it was in 1975. The current rate is now comparable with the rates experienced in other EC countries.
