Vol. 396 No. 3

Written Answers. - New Schools.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

216 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Education if she will outline the financial allocation of her Department for the building of new schools; the schools which will be tendered for in 1990; when the tender letters will issue; the schools where building will start in 1990; if the decisions concerning tenders were made by the Cabinet; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The total capital allocations in the Votes of my Department for primary and post-primary schools for 1990 are £15.6 million and £18.625 million respectively. A separate allocation is not made for the construction of new schools.

As the capital programmes are subject to a number of variables some of which are outside the control of my Department, it is not possible to indicate the tenders whch will be invited during the year or when these invitations will issue and contracts will be placed.
It is my function to decide on these matters.
