Vol. 396 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Tomás MacGiolla

Question:

225 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Education the reason for the delay in making payments to voluntary groups engaged in providing transport for travelling children to and from school from halting sites; and if she will consider making 100 per cent payments available in such cases.

The delay in making these payments at present is due to pressure of work on existing staff resources. The maximum rate of grant payable by my Department to the voluntary groups arranging the transport services is 98 per cent of the total costs. The balance of 2 per cent payable by local interests ensures the continued participation and responsibility of the local interests. My Department are not aware of any instance where a voluntary group was unable to pay this 2 per cent.
