Vol. 396 No. 3

Request for Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

I have had notice from Deputy Quinn that he seeks leave to move a motion under Standing Order 30. I ask him please to state the subject matter.

My request is to move the Adjournment of the House to raise a matter of public importance. The motion reads as follows:

That this House deplores the failure of the Government to take adequate action in the case of a 15-year old girl who has now been remanded eight times in Dún Laoghaire District Court and who is in urgent need of professional help and care. Dáil Éireann calls on the Ministers for Justice, Health and Education to arrive at an agreement immediately in relation to the provision of a proper detention facility for cases such as this and, as a matter of the most extreme urgency, to ensure that the girl concerned receives the care and attention she needs before she becomes a danger to herself and others.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it is one contemplated by Standing Order 30. I cannot, therefore, grant leave to move the motion. Question No. 32 to the Minister, which is on today's Order Paper and with which we have just dealt, refers.
