Vol. 396 No. 3

Written Answers. - Prison Heating Costs.

Séamus Pattison

Question:

54 Mr. Pattison asked the Minister for Justice if he will give figures for the heating costs of Irish prisons; if he will outline the methods of heating used in the case of each prison; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Details of heating costs in respect of the prisons and places of detention are not available and could be obtained only by the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of staff time.

The methods of heating used are primarily natural gas and oil. Of the 12 institutions, ten have dual heating systems. Where this is the case, the fuel used depends on the relative fuel prices at a given time. The details in respect of each of the prisons and places of detention are outlined in a statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report.
