Vol. 396 No. 3

Written Answers. - Ballybetagh (County Dublin) Bogs.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

104 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Finance if, in anticipation of the passage in the current year of amendments to the Wildlife Act, 1976 giving the Wildlife Service responsibility for the conservation of areas of scientific interest because of their geological or geomorphological importance, he will instruct the Wildlife Service to investigate the possibility of purchasing bogs at Ballybetagh, County Dublin, or of arranging a management agreement to conserve these bogs, which are recognised as an area of scientific interest of international importance because of the preservation in them of fossils and sediments from the late glacial period; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I will ask the Wildlife Service to carry out a survey of bogs at Ballybetagh, County Dublin, with a view to their conservation. You will appreciate that, pending the outcome of such a survey and the amendment of the Wildlife Act, purchase of such areas cannot be considered.
