Vol. 397 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tax Paid.

Michael Bell

Question:

60 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Finance the total amount of direct taxation paid by PAYE workers in 1989, expressed in cash terms, as a percentage of gross national product and as a percentage of the total tax take; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The estimated net receipt of income tax collected under the PAYE system in 1989 was £2,335.7 million. This represents 11.5 per cent of gross national product and 31.4 per cent of total tax revenue for 1989. These figures are provisional and may be revised.

Tax collected under PAYE covers more than income tax on ordinary wages and salaries. It includes tax paid by directors of close companies who are akin to the self-employed, as well as tax on "other income" of employees such as rent and other investment income.
