Vol. 397 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Botanic Gardens Refurbishment.

Séamus Pattison

Question:

68 Mr. Pattison asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline his detailed plans for refurbishment of the National Botanic Gardens, Dublin 9 in 1990.

The major refurbishment work which is being undertaken in the Botanic Gardens in 1990 is the restoration of the curvilinear range of glass-houses. The Government approved the proposed restoration late last year and following the recent nomination of a design team detailed planning has begun. It is anticipated that the actual restoration work, which it is estimated will cost £4.4 million, will commence in the second half of this year.

It is hoped also to replace one smaller glasshouse, known as the Carmelia House, later this year.

There are a number of other glass-houses in the Botanic Gardens the condition of which is causing concern and which will require repair before too long. These will receive attention as funds become available.
