Vol. 397 No. 3

Written Answers. - County Tipperary Crime Figures.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

134 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Justice if he will provide the crime figures for south Tipperary for each of the years from 1987 to 1989 inclusive; if he will give a breakdown of the figures in respect of the main towns, namely Clonmel, Carrick-on-Suir, Cahir, Tipperary and Cashel; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the numbers of indictable crimes reported in the areas in question are as set out below:

*1989 figures are provisional.
I am informed by the Garda authorities that while there has been an increase in areas of South Tipperary in the level of indictable crime, mainly burglary and malicious damage, the detection rate has been significant and charges have already been or will be brought against persons in connection with a considerable number of these crimes. The Garda authorities have assured me that the position is being kept under review and that whatever further steps may be appropriate to deal with the situation will be taken.
