Vol. 397 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Milk Quota.

William Cotter

Question:

18 Mr. Cotter asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if a person (details supplied) in County Monaghan will qualify for a milk quota from the one millon gallons of extra quota which have been set aside for applicants whose quotas were affected by disease initially; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I recently established a Milk Quota Appeals Tribunal which will be dealing with applications such as this.

I am arranging to have the details of this case brought to the notice of the tribunal.

This problem goes back to 1978 when the applicant had enormous difficulty with TB and brucellosis and his original quota was cut by about two-thirds as a result. Will the Minister indicate whether the applicant will come within the terms of reference for an increased quota? Has the Minister decided that all those who qualify for an extra quota will — as he suggested but did not clarify — get an equal amount of gallonage? That is crucial to the whole matter.

That is a different question.

The question deals with a particular case.

I did not say that everybody would get an equal amount of gallonage.

The Minister hinted it.

The question related to one individual and I have arranged for the details in this case to be sent to the Milk Quota Review Tribunal which is representative of farmers and others. I hope they will give full consideration to the matter because I am concerned about hardship cases.
