Vol. 397 No. 3

Written Answers. - TB Eradication.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

29 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if Kerry is designated a pilot area for TB eradication; if he will request that ERAD purchase calves and weanlings from restricted herds at market value for sale to special rearing units and that their removal should be accompanied by on the spot payment in order to avoid the intervention of third parties.

I am informed by the director that ERAD are committed in 1990 to controlling the geographical spread of bovine TB and consequently are at present examining the feasibility of measures such as the establishment of special status zones for disease.

I am further informed that there will be no change in existing compensation arrangements whereby ERAD supplements the price paid to the herdowner by the meat factory for the salvage value of reactor animals with a system of grant and income support payments.
