Vol. 397 No. 3

Written Answers. - River Drainage.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

89 Mrs. T. Ahearn, Mr. Bradford and Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Finance if he will provide funding for the adequate drainage of the Funcheon River, which traverses the counties of Cork, Limerick and Tipperary, at which meeting point there is regular and severe flooding; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Commissioners of Public Works could undertake drainage works on the Funcheon River only in the context of a comprehensive drainage scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, for the entire Blackwater catchment in which it is situated. While the Blackwater is included in the priority list of major catchments I cannot say at this stage when it is likely to be reached in the arterial drainage programme. Accordingly the question of providing funding does not arise at this time.
