Vol. 397 No. 3

Written Answers. - Bord Gáis Éireann.

Richard Bruton

Question:

115 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Energy, in view of the compulsory obligation to cease burning bituminous coal from October 1990, if he will consider offering financial support to help Bord Gáis Éireann to backfit a gas supply into housing estates in Dublin which do not have supply already, in view of the fact that on commercial grounds alone, Bord Gáis Éireann have taken the view that they cannot proceed with such back-fitting at present.

Regulation of the use of bituminous coal is a matter for the Minister for the Environment, who has responsibility for air quality, and a working party on "Policy for Fuels in the Dublin Area" has been set up under his aegis in order to help in the action to reduce smog in the Dublin area.

The working party will consider the feasibility of extending the BGÉ gas mains to all built up areas of Dublin city and county and is expected to submit recommendations on this matter within the next few months.
