Vol. 397 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Donegal Factory.

Patrick D. Harte

Question:

37 Mr. Harte asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the outcome of his considerations of the takeover of a company (details supplied) in County Donegal by a company owned by Goodman International; and if, in view of the general disquiet in the area about the future of the factory, he will make a statement on the matter.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply on 28 November 1989, No. 118, to a previous question on the same subject.

The notifying parties have recently furnished additional information which I had requested in accordance with the provisions of the Mergers, Take-overs and Monopolies (Control) Act, 1978, as amended. Accordingly the time limit for the taking of a decision which commenced on receipt of the additional information does not expire until 16 April 1990. In addition, I consider it appropriate that in reaching my decision I should have regard to considerations arising in my examination, under the Act, of the proposed acquisition of another beef processing enterprise.

I am fully aware of the concerns about the future of the Donegal factory and will take a decision as soon as possible.
