167 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education if she will lift the embargo on the appointment of school caretakers and school secretaries in those schools where the authorities are unable to obtain such personnel under the FÁS scheme.

Dermot Fitzpatrick

Question:

168 Dr. D. Fitzpatrick asked the Minister for Education when it is proposed to allow schools which, through one reason or another, have lost secretaries to replace these secretaries.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 167 and 168 together.

In accordance with a Government decision in 1983 my Department's existing schemes for the employment of school caretakers and secretaries is being phased out as employees resign or retire. There is no other scheme operated under my Deartment for the employment of caretakers or secretaries.

The filling of non-teaching posts in schools continues to be subject to the overall policy obtaining in regard to staffing in the public service.
