Vol. 397 No. 5

Written Answers. - Askeaton (Limerick) Second Level Education Facilities.

Michael Finucane

Question:

172 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Education if she will outline her proposals regarding the provision of a secondary school in Askeaton, County Limerick.

The north central area of County Limerick is served by four post-primary schools, located at Askeaton, Foynes, Shanagolden and Pallaskenry. The combined enrolment in the school year 1989-90 was 830 pupils.

The question of how best to organise the provision of post-primary facilities in the area, in the long-term interest of all the pupils, has been the subject of discussions with the school authorities concerned.

In this context a number of important issues have to be addressed by the Department, i.e. the declining pupil potential as evidenced by the demographic trends, and, of course, the capital cost implications.

I hope to make a final decision in the matter following the outcome of these discussions which are on-going.
