Question:

114 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Labour if he will encourage FÁS and other training agencies to develop programmes of training for elderly people to assist them in continuing to play an active part in the community; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 64 and 114 together.

The Labour Services Act, 1987, which established FÁS, assigned to it as one of its functions,

"to provide, arrange for, encourage and foster the provision of training and re-training for employment..."

The precise courses to be provided by FÁS in pursuance of this function would be a day to day matter for FÁS and I would, therefore, suggest that the Deputy contact FÁS directly regarding the specific courses mentioned in his questions.
