Vol. 397 No. 5

Written Answers. - Beef Imports.

Paul McGrath

Question:

112 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will make a statement on the fact that beef imports into Ireland have almost doubled from 1987 to 1989; and the effect which this unprecedented increase has on the depressed beef trade.

The increase in beef imports relates mainly to beef in bone-in form imported from Northern Ireland. This beef is processed here providing valuable employment and makes a useful contribution to the development of the beef industry. Most of this product is subsequently exported.
