Vol. 397 No. 5

Written Answers. - Enduring Powers of Attorney.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

120 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the legal problems affecting those who wish to make provision for the management of their affairs by executing enduring powers of attorney in anticipation of the onset of Alzheimer's disease or senile decay; and if he will introduce legislation to implement the recommendation of the Law Reform Commission on this issue.

For reasons which have been explained in this House on previous occasions, I could not undertake to indicate, by way of reply to parliamentary questions, what specific proposals I might have in regard to legislation in a particular area.

I might mention that examination of the Law Reform Commission's report is proceeding as quickly as other urgent demands on my Department's resources permit and any legislative proposals which arise therefrom will be announced by me in the normal way.
