Written Answers. - Fish Farming.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

62 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Marine if the ESB has made any report to him concerning their fish farming operations, and if he is satisfied that there has been no diminution in the ESB's commitment to fishery conservation.

The ESB engage in various inland fisheries activities and also in aquaculture operations.

As regards their inland fishery activities, the ESB submit to me an annual report in accordance with the terms of the Electricity Supply Act, 1927-88. In that context I am satisfied that there has been no diminution in the commitment of the ESB to fishery conservation.

As regards aquaculture, the ESB are required to (i) provide data to underpin aquaculture licence decisions and (2) to provide data in relation to the operation of particular installations. The ESB have undertaken and continue to pursue fisheries conservation in a systematic fashion.
