Vol. 397 No. 9

Written Answers. - Fire Resistant Fabrics.

Dermot Fitzpatrick

Question:

161 Dr. Fitzpatrick asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce who enforces the legislation regarding the use of fire resistant fabrics in furniture; who sets the standards; and where the testing of these fire resistant fabrics is carried out.

The Director of Consumer Affairs and Fair Trade is responsible for the enforcement of the Industrial Research and Standards (Fire Safety) (Domestic Furniture) Order, 1988, (S.I. No. 336 of 1988), which controls the use of fire resistant fabrics and other materials in domestic furniture. Under the order, only fabrics meeting specific safety requirements can be sold after 1 March 1990.

Eolas has published, with my consent, Irish Standard 419 of 1988 entitledFire Safety requirements for Components of Furniture which include specifications for fire resistant fabrics as well as other components of domestic furniture. Compliance with this standard has been made mandatory by the above ministerial order.
Testing of fire resistant fabrics under the order is a matter for Eolas, who may also arrange for testing to be carried out on its behalf.
