Vol. 397 No. 9

Written Answers. - Non-Nationals in Prison.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

193 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Justice the number of non-Irish nationals in Irish jails.

It is estimated that about 98 per cent of offenders in Irish prisons are Irish nationals.

In the case of the remaining 40 or so offenders, whose nationality status is unclear, it would be necessary to examine the circumstances of each case to determine definitively if those concerned are non-nationals and such an examination would involve a commitment of staff time to an extent that could not be warranted.
