Vol. 397 No. 9

Written Answers. - Family Law Bill.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

196 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Justice when he intends introducing the Family Law (Protection of Spouses and Children) (Amendment) Bill, 1987, which lapsed in 1989 on the dissolution of the Dáil.

The Family Law (Protection of Spouses and Children) (Amendment) Bill, 1987, was introduced in response to representations from one of the voluntary agencies working in the area of family welfare. As the Bill progressed, strong representations were made by a number of voluntary agencies concerned with family violence, including the one at whose urging the Bill had originally been introduced, that the proposals in the Bill might tend to diminish rather than increase the legal protection afforded to the victims of family volence. Accordingly, progress on the Bill halted, and I have no plans at present for its reintroduction.
