Vol. 397 No. 9

Written Answers. - Bomb Scare Procedure.

Patrick McCartan

Question:

204 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister if he has or will carry out an inquiry into the handling of a reported bomb scare at the Public Building, Housing Library and other services at Farnham Street in Cavan on 2 March 1990, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.; if he is concerned that the public and traffic were not diverted from the street; that the main response was to close the building for the period of two hours; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is not the practice for Ministers for Justice to make statements to the House about specific Garda operations except in singular instances where the circumstances of an operation, or some particular aspect of it, are so exceptional that such a course is deemed to be appropriate. I do not propose to make any statement about the particular matter referred to in the Question except to say that I am not to be taken as agreeing with any inference contained in the Question that the Garda performance in relation to this matter was in any way inadequate.
