Vol. 397 No. 9

Written Answers. - Fish Farming Proposals.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

240 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for the Environment if he has been consulted by the Minister for the Marine in relation to fresh water fish farming proposals; the standards which will be established by the Department of the Marine in relation to the environmental impact which such farms may have on the adjoining habitat; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Minister for the Marine is establishing a working group to consider the environmental impact of fresh water fish hatcheries. This group will include representatives of my Department, the Department of Energy and Health, the ESB and other fresh water salmon producers. The questions of effluent discharges and quality standards to be applied will be considered by this group.
