Question:

277 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give favourable consideration to an application for a special grant in order to enable Kildare County Council to carry out footpath improvements at Main Street, Maynooth, County Kildare, which is on a national primary route; if provision has been made for same in the context of the 1991 Estimates; if not, if he will allow for such works to be carried out within the context of the current year's Estimates; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am taking Questions Nos. 276 and 277 together. An application for specific road grants for the works in question has not been received from the local authority. The normal source of road grant funding for footpaths and minor road drainage works on national primary routes is the annual road grant allocation for ordinary maintenance works on these routes. The 1990 allocation under this heading to Kildare County Council is £390,000. The development of the programme of works on foot of this allocation is a matter for the local authority. It would be open to the authority to include the works referred in this year's programme or in future years programmes for national primary road maintenance.
