Vol. 397 No. 9

Written Answers. - Medical Card Eligibility.

Michael Moynihan

Question:

288 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for Health the present position of an insured worker in respect of eligibility for a medical card where the gross income shown on the P60 is inclusive of allowances for meals and travelling expenses; and if health boards can exclude such amounts from assessment to determine eligibility in any such case.

Even though a person's gross income exceeds the guidelines for medical card eligibility, he may still be awarded a medical card if he meets the statutory criterion i.e. that, in the opinion of the chief executive officer of the relevant health board, he is unable to arrange general practitioner services for himself and his dependants without undue hardship. In forming this opinion the chief executive officer takes all relevant considerations into account including factors such as those referred to by the Deputy.
