Vol. 397 No. 9

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

336 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Education if she will authorise CIE to transport the children of a person (details supplied) to Kilbeg School, in County Meath, in view of the fact that they are outside the three mile limit and that the school in their catchment area is further away from them in Kilbeg.

My Department has had no application for school transport from the person in question. If the Deputy could arrange to have the names and dates of birth of the children supplied to my Department immediate inquiries would be made in regard to their eligibility under the terms of the school transport scheme.

John Bruton

Question:

337 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education the way in which closed national schools affect the continuing operation of school transport in the area formerly covered by the closed school; and if these special closed schools arrangements for transport purposes remain in effect indefinitely or if they are subject to a time limit.

When a school is closed and amalgamated with another, all the national school children in the district of the closed school are eligible for free transport to the amalgamated school. An average of seven eligible children is required to warrant the continuance of this service.

Where the school has been closed for a period of not less than seven years, my Department will consider allowing transport to the nearest school (where this is not the school of amalgamation) subject to the usual age and distance conditions governing eligibility under the scheme. Such facility may not be granted unless the board of management of the school of amalgamation gives it assent.
