Vol. 397 No. 9

Written Answers. - Single School Attendance Committee.

John Bruton

Question:

347 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education if she met the chairpersons of the school attendance committees in Dublin on 26 October 1989 to discuss a proposal from those committees for the introduction of a single school attendance committee covering the entire Dublin area in order that officers of the school attendance committees could operate throughout the Dublin area thereby maximising the effective use of manpower, rather than confine officers to individual school attendance districts, as is the present legal requirement; if she has any proposals to deal with this matter either by means of legislation or otherwise; and, if so, when such action will be taken.

I can confirm that the meeting referred to by the Deputy took place and that the proposal outlined in his question was discussed at the meeting. That proposal is currently being examined by my Department. A decision on appropriate action will have to await completion of an assessment of the full legal administrative and financial implications of the proposal.
