Vol. 397 No. 9

Written Answers. - Pre-School Pupil Numbers.

Tomás MacGiolla

Question:

355 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Education the estimated total number of children who at present attend pre-schools (a) which are supported by her Department, (b) which are licensed or regulated in other ways and (c) which are not regulated.

My Department fund a special project for pre-school children raised in a socio-economic disadvantaged area. There are 103 children attending the school which is located at Seán McDermott Street, Dublin. The project is known as the Rutland Street Project and has been in operation since 1969. I understand that in 1987 the number of children attending pre-schools assisted by the health boards was some 7,200. I have no information on the number of children being catered for in non-aided pre-school groups.
