Vol. 397 No. 9

Written Answers. - Craft Workers Pay Rates.

Richard Bruton

Question:

74 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Defence how the rates of payment for craft workers in the Department of Defence compare to rates to similar workers in the private sector; and if he would indicate whether a review of these rates of pay are included under the terms of reference of the Gleeson report.

Civilian craftsmen employed with the Defence Forces have parity of pay with craftsmen in the local authorities. The pay of those craftsmen is reviewed in the Department of Finance by reference to an agreed list of outside analogues which cover both the public and private sectors.

The terms of reference of the Gleeson review body refer sopecifically to members of the Defence Forces. Civilian employees do not come within its remit.
