Vol. 397 No. 9

Written Answers. - EC Presidency Programme.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

77 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the action he has taken to date to advance Ireland's Green Presidency of the EC Council, as promised by the Taoiseach in January 1990; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government has identified the environment as a particular priority during Ireland's Presidency of the Council of the European Communities. I underlined this priority in my Presidency programme address to the European Parliament in January and again when I addressed the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Secondary Legislation on 7 February. However, the Council (General Affairs), over which I preside, does not have direct responsibility for environmental matters.
