Vol. 399 No. 2

Ceisteanna — Questions Oral Answers. - Additional Jobs in ESB.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

14 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Energy if he will outline the number of additional jobs that will be created arising from the ESB capital expenditure programme for 1990; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is unlikely that any additional jobs will be created in 1990 arising from the ESB's capital programme.

Does the Minister envisage any further losses in the ESB?

I am surprised at that question because the ESB showed a profit last year of £11 million.

Sorry, I did not phrase the question properly. Does the Minister envisage any further job losses?

The ESB is a fairly large organisation. The Deputy is no doubt aware of the situation at Arigna but he did not ask a specific question. The question relates to additional jobs being created. He did not ask about any possible redundancies. The situation in Arigna is difficult and the House has debated it recently.
