Vol. 399 No. 2

Written Answers. - Alternative Energy Experiment.

John Bruton

Question:

29 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Energy if any studies have been commissioned on the possibility of using waste heat from Tara Mines Limited in space heating of houses in Navan, on a district heating basis.

I have been informed by the company concerned that consultants commissioned in 1981 to evaluate the potential, as a medium for heating, of exhaust emission from its oil fired concentrate drying equipment — the primary source of water heat at the company's ore processing plant — concluded that the energy source was inadequate for the purpose then envisaged, i.e. heating of certain mine offices. On this basis, these emissions would, therefore, be entirely inadequate to make any significant contribution to the heating of houses in Navan.
