Vol. 400 No. 9

Written Answers. - Ballinamore-Ballyconnell Canal.

Edward Nealon

Question:

119 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Finance if detailed plans and drawings have been prepared for the work of reopening the Ballinamore and Ballyconnell Canal; and if he will continue the work to be carried out.

Detailed design work for the section of the Ballinamore and Ballyconnell Canal between Leitrim village and Castlefore is 95 per cent complete. The detailed design work for the section between Ballyconnell and Lough Erne is approximately 60 per cent complete. Detailed design of the remaining sections of the project is being undertaken to suit the overall construction programme.

It is proposed to restore the still-water canal by clearing and enlarging the channel, constructing embankments, repairing locks and bridges and installing additional weirs where necessary. Along the remaining sections of the navigation, the work proposed consists of excavating the Woodford river channel and dredging lakes to provide a navigation depth, constructing new locks and weirs and underpinning or rebuilding bridges. Mooring facilities will be provided at various locations.
