Vol. 400 No. 9

Written Answers. - Prison Population.

Richard Bruton

Question:

166 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice the average daily prison population in the past 12 months; the number of prison places available; and the extent to which the principle of one person per cell has had to be abandoned.

The daily average prison population over the past 12 months is not available. At present the prison system accommodates a daily average population of 2,091 and it is estimated that the figure for the past 12 months would not be significantly different.

Accommodation was available for the total number of prisoners held on all occasions.

It is not accepted that single cell accommodation is appropriate in all cases.
