Vol. 400 No. 9

Written Answers. - Uninsured Driving.

Richard Bruton

Question:

167 Mr. R. Burton asked the Minister for Justice the extent to which uninsured driving has been targeted by the Garda during the past 12 months; and the estimated proportion of cars checked which were found to be uninsured.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that enforcement of the laws and regulations governing motor insurance is given a high priority by the force. In 1989, court proceedings were instituted by members of the Garda Síochána for a total of 76,846 motor insurance offences detected by them.

As records are not maintained by the Garda of the total number of vehicles checked for compliance with the insurance laws and regulations, the number of offences detected cannot be expressed as a proportion of that number.
