Vol. 400 No. 9

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Coal-mining Industry.

Séamus Pattison

Question:

6 Mr. Pattison asked the Minister for Energy if he will outline his plans for the development of the coal-mining industry in Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

An assessment of the coal resources in the Irish coalfield areas was carried out in 1982 by consultants engaged by my Department. Subsequent interest was focused largely on the potential of the Leinster coalfield. Prospecting licences were issued to exploration interests over most of that area and substantial funds were expended by them on further investigation of the coalfield. Arising out of this work I am at present considering applications for mining leases in parts of the coalfield in Counties Kilkenny and Laois.
