Vol. 400 No. 9

Written Answers. - Leixlip, (Kildare) Road Works.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

198 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give an assurance that the allocation to Kildare County Council will be sufficient to provide for the improvement of footpaths at Leixlip, County Kildare, having regard to the fact that this town is on a national primary route; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I understand that Kildare County Council have estimated the cost of improving footpaths and drainage on the N4 in Leixlip at approximately £50,000.

The normal source of road grant funding for such works is the annual road grant allocation for ordinary maintenance works on national primary routes. The 1990 allocation under this heading to Kildare County Council is £390,000. The development of the programme of works on foot of this allocation is a matter for the local authority. It would be open to the authority to include the works in question in this year's programme or in future programmes for national primary road maintenance.
