Vol. 400 No. 9

Written Answers. - Peat Land Survey.

John Connor

Question:

25 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Energy if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a national peat land survey, carried out by the forestry and wildlife service of the Office of Public Works, has designated numerous tracts of bogland throughout the country as areas of national and international scientific interest; and if he will outline the attitude of his Department towards continued peat extraction for fuel from these designated areas, having regard to the recommendations in the report that they should be preserved and protected.

The survey referred to by the Deputy has not been published as yet as I am not in a position, therefore, to comment on its contents. My Department and Bord na Móna work in close co-operation with the Office of Public Works on these issues.
