Vol. 400 No. 9

Written Answers. - Foreign Military Aircraft Overflights.

Tony Gregory

Question:

98 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the annual number of foreign military aircraft which were granted overflying permission by the Irish authorities for each year over the period from 1 January 1946 to 31 December 1989, inclusive; the type of aircraft involved; and the country of origin.

Question:

100 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the annual number of foreign military aircraft which were granted permission to land at airports, within the territory of the State, for each year over the period from 1 January 1946 to 31 December 1989, inclusive; the type of aircraft involved; the country of origin; and the airport at which the landing took place.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 98 and 100 together.

It would require an inordinate amount of time and resources to provide the information requested for the whole period 1946 to 1989. The information requested by the Deputy in respect of the last three years has been provided to the Dáil and is in the Official Reports, Vol. 376, No. 9, cols. 2026-2028 of 15 December 1987, Vol. 383, No. 6, cols. 1415-1424 of 2 November 1988, Vol. 389, No. 7, cols 1458-1460 of 9 May 1989 and Vol. 398, No. 8, cols. 1819-1822 of 16 May 1990.

Question:

99 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will outline the number of foreign military aircraft granted overflying permission by the Irish authorities to date in 1990; the type of aircraft involved; and the country of origin.

Information regarding overflights of the State by foreign military aircraft to end June 1990 is set out in the following tabular statement. Permission is normally granted for overflights provided certain conditions are met, the most important of which are that the relevant aircraft are unarmed, carry no arms, ammunition or explosives and do not engage in intelligence gathering and that the flights in question do not form part of military exercises or operations.
