Vol. 400 No. 9

Written Answers. - Air Traffic Control Facilities.

Tony Gregory

Question:

102 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will outline the agreements concluded between Ireland and foreign Governments regarding the provision of high-frequency air traffic control facilities to foreign military aircraft from the station at Ballygirreen, County Clare.

The station at Ballygirreen does not provide "high frequency air traffic control facilities" and it is assumed that the Deputy is referring to the two-way high frequency radio link, between aircraft operating on the North Atlantic and Prestwick Air Traffic Control Centre in Scotland, provided by the Shannon Aer-radio station at Ballygirreen. Ballygirreen also provides a continuous aeronautical weather report and forecasting service.

The agreement under which high frequency communications services are provided at Ballygirreen is the exchange of notes between the Government of Ireland and the Government of the United Kingdom relating to the oceanic control centres at Shannon and Prestwick (Treaty Series 1966 No. 5) which is available for consultation in the Library of the Oireachtas.
