Patrick McCartan

Question:

40 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Justice if the Government accept in full the recommendations of the Martin Committee; if any timetable has been set for the implementation of the recommendations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

63 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the recent call made by the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors for the videotaping of Garda interrogation of persons suspected of serious crime, in view of the fact that the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, provided for such videotaping; when it is intended to introduce such procedures; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 23, 40 and 63 together.

The call by the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors was made in a submission to the committee, under the chairmanship of Judge Frank Martin, which I appointed in November 1989 to inquire into certain aspects of criminal procedure.

The committee's report was published on 30 March 1990 and is being examined as a matter of urgency with a view to bringing forward appropriate proposals.
