Vol. 401 No. 2

Written Answers. - Nuisance Alarm Calls.

Tomás MacGiolla

Question:

26 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to claims made at the recent conference of the Irish Security Industry Association in Cork that nuisance alarm calls, many of them due to faulty, unsuitable or badly-set equipment, are costing the Garda up to £10 million per annum; if he will consider introducing a system of licensing for alarm companies to guarantee that installations are of an acceptable quality and do not result in the waste of Garda time; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Effective intruder alarm systems have a valuable part to play in protecting property and assisting the prevention and detection of crime. However, there is serious concern on the part of the Garda authorities at the waste of time and resources involved in responding to the very high number of false or accidental alarms. The commissioner is reviewing policy in relation to Garda response to alarms with a view to the introduction of measures designed to reduce the number of false or accidental alarms.
