Bernard Allen

Question:

76 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education the number of students who attended secretarial/post secondary business courses in the country's vocational, community, comprehensive and non-aided private schools in the school years 1987-1988, 1988-1989 and 1989-1990; and if any of these students had certification in any area of computer technology applications.

* The term "Non-General Courses" is used to distinguish pupils enrolled in such courses from those pupils enrolled in Junior Cycle, Leaving Certifi cate and Transition Year Courses. Data provided in the reply are, therefore, exclusive of pupils enrolled in the three types of course. For the Secondary Vocational, Community and Comprehensive sectors, a break-down of pupils in non-general courses between "Secretarial Courses" and "Other Courses" is not available for the 1988-89 and 1989-90 Academic Years. With regard to the question of certification, it should be noted that the vast majority of Secondary, Vocational, Community and Comprehensive pupils enrolled in Non-General Courses are enrolled under the Vocational Preparation and Training Scheme. Under the terms of the V.P.T. scheme, certification of pupils is the responsibility of the school concerned and, consequently, data are not available concerning the exact details of certificates awarded to participants. It may be assumed, however, given the broad-based nature of the V .P.T. scheme, that many students are provided with instruction in computers and related applications. Data concerning certification of pupils in non-aided schools are not available.
†Data in respect of non-aided schools refer only to those schools who made statistical returns to the Department. For example, in relation to th he 1989-90 Academic Year, ten out of a total of thirty-three schools surveyed provided statistical data on their enrolments.
‡Data in respect of the 1989-90 Academic Year are provisional.
