Vol. 401 No. 4

Written Answers. - Salmon Farming Licence.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

105 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for the Marine the production capacity of the salmon farming licence issued to a company (details supplied) in Killary Harbour, County Galway; when the licence issued; and the estimated maximum production capacity of Killary Harbour for salmon rearing.

Killary Salmon Company Limited have been approved by my Department to harvest 450 tonnes of salmon annually at their fish farm at Rossroe, Killary Harbour.

As I have informed the House previously, the regularisation of the licence status of all existing marine fish farms by the end of 1991 is envisaged under the Government's environmental action programme. This work is currently in train in my Department and in this context, the issue of the appropriate licence to Killary Salmon Company is being finalised.

Before a salmon farm is approved, an assessment is made in relation to its impact on the area where it is to be sited. I am satisfied that approved production levels can be accommodated within Killary Harbour.
